Why concrete needs sealing here in particular
Concrete looks solid and behaves like a sponge. It is full of capillaries that pull in water, and once that water is inside it, a Kansas City winter does the rest. Every freeze expands it, every thaw lets more in, and the cycle works outward from the inside until the surface starts flaking away in sheets. That is spalling, and it is the single most common way a driveway fails long before the slab underneath it is worn out.
Road salt makes it faster. Salt brine tracks off the car and onto the apron, drives the freeze point around, and keeps concrete going through cycles on days it otherwise would not. Add oil, fertilizer, and de-icer, and an unsealed driveway is absorbing something corrosive most of the year. A sealed slab closes those capillaries, so the water, the salt, and the oil sit on the surface where they can be rinsed off instead of soaking in.

What the slab needs decides what goes on it
Exterior concrete is not one problem. A driveway that takes road salt, a patio that takes furniture and shade, and a loading pad that takes wheels all want different answers, and we spec against what the slab actually does.
How wet the slab is
We moisture-test concrete before we quote it. On an exterior slab that also means looking at where the water goes — drainage, downspouts, and low spots that hold standing water — because sealing a slab that is being fed water from somewhere else only moves the problem.
What condition it is in
A slab with tight surface wear is a different job from one that is already spalling, and a slab with structural cracking may not be a coating job at all. Cracks, pop-outs, and control joints are cut out and rebuilt as part of the work rather than sealed over and left to reopen.
What crosses it
Vehicles and road salt, patio furniture and bare feet, or pallet jacks and forklifts. Each of those wants a different balance of hardness, traction, and chemical resistance, and each affects the finish we recommend.
Prep is what decides whether the seal lasts
Exterior concrete arrives dirtier than anything else we coat, and everything on it is something a sealer would otherwise be bonded to instead of the slab.
Clean and degrease first
Oil, tire rubber, fertilizer stains, algae, and years of ground-in grit all come off before anything goes down. Oil in particular has to be pulled out of the surface rather than washed off it, because a sealer will not bond through it.
Repair before sealing
Spalled areas, pop-outs, and cracks are cut out and rebuilt. Sealing over damage locks the damage in and gives the water somewhere to keep working, which is how a slab ends up worse than it started.
Honest assessment
Sealing protects a sound slab. It does not fix a driveway that has heaved, settled, or cracked structurally. If that is what we find, we will say so — there is no version of this where a coating repairs a base problem.

Often, yes. Surface spalling is repairable — the damaged areas are cut out and rebuilt during prep, then the whole slab is sealed so the cycle stops. What is not repairable with a coating is structural cracking, heaving, or settlement, because those are base problems. We will tell you which one you have rather than sealing over the wrong thing.
Will sealing make the driveway slippery?
Traction is part of the specification, not an afterthought. An exterior slab that gets rain, ice, and bare feet is spec'd differently from an interior floor, and it is one of the things we ask about at the walkthrough. Tell us how the surface gets used and it goes into the proposal.
What about oil stains that are already there?
Oil has to come out of the surface before anything is sealed over it, because a sealer will not bond through it. Degreasing is part of prep. How much of the visible staining lifts depends on how long it has been in there, and we will give you a straight answer on that when we look at the slab rather than promising it will disappear.
Can you do the patio, walkways, and retaining walls at the same time?
